Staff at Asda's head office in Leeds have donned Dan Burn masks and recreated his viral dance from 2023 to cheer on the Newcastle and England defender, who worked at the Blyth store aged 16. The supermarket's support comes ahead of England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina, where the nation hopes to see Burn's celebration dance later tonight.
From shelf stacker to World Cup star
Dan Burn, now a key defender for England, famously worked as a shelf stacker at Asda before signing his first professional contract with Darlington. The supermarket chain has embraced his roots, with staff at the Leeds head office filming themselves performing the 'Dan Burn dance' while wearing masks of the player. The video was captioned: "Dance if you want Big Dan Burn off the bench."
Burn's celebration dance went viral in 2023 after Newcastle United secured their place in the Carabao Cup semi-final, eventually finishing as runners-up that year. He later recreated the dance with football pundits Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards on CBS Sports' Champions League coverage.
England's World Cup run
England are aiming to reach their first World Cup final in 60 years, with Burn making impactful cameo appearances in the tournament. The 6ft 7in Geordie made eight defensive contributions in just 15 minutes against Mexico at the Azteca in the Round of 16. He also came on in the 111th minute against Norway, helping to see out the victory alongside two-goal hero Jude Bellingham.
Asda's pride in former colleague
An Asda spokesperson said: "From Asda to Atlanta - Dan Burn will always be part of the Asda family. We're incredibly proud to see a former colleague achieving so much, and we’re right behind him and the boys every step of the way."
The nation will be hoping to see Dan dancing in celebration later tonight as England look to make history.
