Art Garfunkel has disclosed a private and emotional reunion with his former musical partner Paul Simon, though he remains uncertain about the prospect of them performing together again. The 84-year-old singer revealed that he dined with Simon, also 84, last year, describing the encounter as "very lovely."
Emotional Dinner and Uncertain Future
In an interview with People magazine, Garfunkel shared details of the reunion, saying, "There were tears, there were hugs. I don’t know if it’ll lead to anything. I don’t think so much about him as I think about what’s ahead of me. I’m feeling very positive now." The pair have not played live together for over a decade, with their last performances cancelled in 2010 due to Garfunkel's vocal cord issues.
Upcoming Tour: What a Wonderful World
Garfunkel is preparing for his upcoming tour, titled "What a Wonderful World: Celebration Concerts," which will span the U.S. and Europe from July 24 to November 19. UK dates in October include stops in London, Manchester, and Wolverhampton. He insists his voice is in top form, stating, "In a way, you’re always back to square one. If you’re not alive and happening now, what are you? You can’t live on your past. You’ve got to keep going with a meaningful agenda."
History of Simon & Garfunkel
Simon & Garfunkel met as children in Queens, New York, bonding over a shared love of music at school. They achieved massive success with hits like "The Sound of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water," selling over 100 million records worldwide. However, Garfunkel felt at a "disadvantage" as a singer only, while Simon wrote the songs. When Garfunkel accepted a role in the 1970 film Catch-22, it led to a falling out between the duo. They reunited for a historic 1981 concert in Central Park and later toured, but have not performed together since 2010.
Current Relationship and Personal Life
Reflecting on their friendship today, Garfunkel said, "It goes in and out. It’s got a summer and a winter." He also spoke of the support from his family, including his wife Kathryn Luce Garfunkel and their sons Art Jr., 35, and Beau, 20. He added, "My love life is so free of trouble. I'm so happy. And my work life is very exciting now. So it's a good time. Success is liking yourself, staying interesting to yourself all through your life."
