The BBC programme Antiques Roadshow has broadcast a tribute to expert Theo Burrell, who died aged 39 following a battle with brain cancer. The tribute aired during a repeat episode on Sunday, July 19, showing a montage of some of her memorable moments on the show.
Burrell joined the Antiques Roadshow team in 2018, appearing numerous times as her specialties included European ceramics, fine furniture and art from 1860. The Edinburgh-based specialist disclosed in June 2022 that she had been diagnosed with an incurable aggressive grade 4 brain tumour and was told she would have two years to live.
Personal Milestones After Diagnosis
After her diagnosis, while campaigning to raise awareness of the condition, Burrell married her husband and celebrated moments in her young son's life, such as his first day of school. Her family confirmed her death earlier this month, stating: "It is with great sadness that I share the news that Theo passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday afternoon. Neither she nor her medical team foresaw this happening quite so quickly."
The family added: "She was an incredible person who fought hard for her family, friends and raising awareness of this cruel disease. She saw life events like her son's first day at school and her wedding that a little over 4 years ago we thought she'd never see."
Tribute on the Show
Sunday's episode, first broadcast in 2022, concluded with a tribute to Burrell, as a "Remembering Theo Burrell" image appeared before footage of the expert. The clip featured a montage of the BBC specialist discussing various antiques, including one where presenter Fiona Bruce expressed her gratitude.
After the announcement of her death, tributes poured in. Brain Tumour Research commented: "We are heartbroken that we have lost the phenomenal, determined and truly inspiring Theo to this devastating disease. She constantly inspired us with how big her heart was and we will continue on our mission, driven by everything she taught us."
The Brain Tumour Charity also wrote: "We are devastated to hear this. Theo was an incredible voice within the community, raising vital awareness on the urgent need to improve the lives of those affected by this disease. It’s a heartbreaking reminder that we must continue to move further and faster to find kinder more effective treatments for all brain tumours."
