Andy Crane's Broom Cupboard Days: From CBBC to Classic FM – A Look Back at His Iconic Career
Andy Crane: From CBBC's broom cupboard to Classic FM

Andy Crane, the former CBBC presenter who charmed a generation of children from the BBC's infamous 'broom cupboard', has opened up about his early career and his transition to Classic FM.

Best known for his energetic presenting style alongside puppet sidekick Edd the Duck, Crane became a household name in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now, decades later, he looks back fondly on those chaotic days broadcasting from a tiny studio.

From Broom Cupboard to Broadcasting Legend

"It was literally a broom cupboard," Crane recalls with a laugh. "Just big enough for me, a camera, and Edd the Duck. But those were some of the best years of my career."

After leaving children's TV, Crane went on to present across various BBC radio stations before finding his current home at Classic FM, where he now hosts weekend shows.

A Career Built on Charm and Energy

What made Crane stand out was his infectious enthusiasm and ability to connect with young viewers. "You had to be yourself," he says. "Kids can spot a fake a mile away."

That authenticity has served him well throughout his career, earning him loyal listeners on Classic FM where he shares his passion for classical music.

The Legacy of Children's TV

Crane's reflections come as nostalgia for classic children's programming grows. Many who grew up watching him now introduce their own children to clips on YouTube.

"It's wonderful to hear from people who remember those days," Crane says. "Though I'm not sure they realise just how small that cupboard really was!"
