Early Life and Meeting Andy Burnham
Marie-France van Heel, the Dutch-born wife of incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham, met her husband while both were studying at the University of Cambridge in 1989. The pair bonded over their shared love for the band The Smiths at Fitzwilliam College. Now 56, van Heel has largely stayed out of the public eye, but her past includes a notable appearance on the hit ITV show Blind Date in the 1980s, where her chosen date described her as a "cold fish."
Career and Business Ventures
Van Heel has built a successful career in marketing. She previously worked for BSkyB before launching her own company, MVH Marketing. She also served as Chief Executive of the creative consultancy Heavenly, whose clients include the BBC, the National Trust, and England Rugby. Currently, she sits on the board of Be.EV, an electric vehicle charging network, and has raised funds for charities such as Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Family Life and Political Support
The Burnhams married in 2000 and have three children: Jimmy, 26; Rosie, 24; and Annie, 21. Rosie was present at the Makerfield by-election count to congratulate her father on his victory, which propelled him toward becoming Prime Minister. Despite her husband's political career, van Heel has been described by a former colleague as not enjoying "being a political wife." The colleague told The Daily Mail: "I'm sure Frankie will turn up and be supportive when she needs to be, but she's just not comfortable in the spotlight."
Health Battle and Personal Challenges
In 2010, van Heel revealed she had undergone a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with the BRCA1 breast cancer gene. Three of her relatives had died from the disease, including her sister Claire, who passed away at age 39. Burnham told the Daily Mirror at the time: "She did what she did because she'd seen the devastation breast cancer had caused to her sisters and mother. We more than most know what could have happened and we had to find a way to get beyond it." He added that the decision had "lifted the cloud of fear."
Reaction to Burnham's Political Ambitions
When Burnham expressed his desire to return to Westminster and run for Prime Minister, van Heel's reaction was less than enthusiastic. According to Burnham, her response was "probably a two word answer" and only "probably half-joking." He admitted to The Sunday Times that "some encouragement" was needed. In 2015, when Burnham ran for the Labour leadership, van Heel humorously recalled being attracted to his long hair, good looks, and "the monobrow."
Blind Date Encounter and Political Circles
Years after her Blind Date appearance, van Heel reportedly met her date from the show, Will Harris, in a bar at the House of Commons. While she had remained on the fringes of political life, Harris had become marketing director for the Conservative Party. The encounter highlighted the intersecting worlds of politics and entertainment in which van Heel has occasionally moved.
