Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson could soon be packing their bags for the United Arab Emirates as the pair face "few, if any, other options left" in the UK, according to a top royal expert.
The former Duke and Duchess of York could be eyeing up a dramatic move to the Middle East to escape their ongoing exile and rebuild their lives away from British public scrutiny.
Privacy and Luxury in the UAE
According to royal biographer Nigel Cawthorne, a permanent relocation to the UAE would offer the duo a combination of high-grade privacy, lavish luxury and protection that they can no longer command in Britain.
Speaking about the prospect of the former Duke and Duchess of York starting afresh abroad, Mr Cawthorne told the Sunday Express: "It would make tremendous sense for Andrew and Fergie to live out the rest of their days there, not only with the kind of security they could never be able to afford themselves but also in the style to which they were once both accustomed."
Limited Options in the UK
The potential exit strategy comes amid growing reports that Andrew has grown "utterly miserable" in his diminished role, isolated from official royal life following the fallout from his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has consistently and vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson - who has long maintained a close relationship and shared living arrangements with her ex-husband after their divorce in 1996 - is said to be facing commercial hurdles of her own. Mr Cawthorne noted that, with limited prospects left at home, the pair may feel backed into a corner where exile abroad becomes their only viable path forward.
"They have few, if any, other options left," Mr Cawthorne added. "At this stage, it's the two of them against the world."
Sanctuary in the Gulf
The Gulf region, particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has long served as a discreet sanctuary for high-profile figures seeking privacy, top-tier personal security, and an opulent lifestyle. Relocating to the UAE would allow Andrew and Sarah to regain a lavish royal lifestyle backed by world-class private security and strong local connections.
Following years of backlash over his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and civil allegations of sexual abuse brought by Virginia Giuffre - which Andrew has consistently denied - King Charles took action in October 2025. He formally stripped Andrew of his "Prince" title, "HRH" style and peerage titles, including the Duke of York. He is now officially known simply as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Sarah also lost her courtesy title as Duchess of York.
Following his eviction from Windsor's 30-room Royal Lodge in February, Andrew relocated to private housing on the King's Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Fergie has since adopted a nomadic lifestyle, hiding out at Swiss retreats and a £2,000-a-night Austrian spa before resorting to crashing with wealthy international friends.
