Amy Irons, the Scottish TV and radio presenter, has announced she is pregnant with her first baby. Sharing the news on her BBC Radio Scotland show, she revealed that the time has been anxious but exciting.
The 35-year-old sat down with her The Saturday Show co-host Steven Mills on the morning of October 10 to make the joyful announcement to regular listeners. She shared that she and her partner Elliot are expecting a boy, and the couple are over the moon to welcome their first child.
Emotional on-air announcement
A clip of the announcement was uploaded to the BBC Radio Scot Instagram page, where Amy excitedly broke the news as Steven shared heartfelt words that left her in tears on air. Many listeners and social media users have since shared their congratulations.
In the clip, Amy said: "Any parents out there or any expectant mums, you'll know that every week is just this kind of anxious, nervous time where you're just hoping that things are going to be okay and thankfully everything's looking great at the moment and I've felt alright."
Co-host's heartfelt words and gift
Grateful that the secret has finally been revealed after keeping his lips sealed for two months, Steven added: "I just think of all the things that you've gone through and when you told me I couldn't have been happier for you because I think you deserve it.
"I know it's something that you've always wanted. I think that Elliot is an amazing guy as well. You've met someone who is just perfect for you. The first time I saw yous together, I was like 'Oh this is how it's meant to be'."
He added: "I think you'll be amazing parents. I think you'll be an amazing mum. I am so happy for you." Leaving Amy in tears, Steven then surprised her with a sweet baby grow with The Saturday Show logo on the front as an early pregnancy gift.
Fans react and family tradition
Many fans have since shared their congratulations online, as one person wrote: "Congratulations that’s amazing news baby boy will be so loved by all." With another adding: "Huge congratulations Amy, that’s such lovely news." A third viewer also penned: "Oh no one deserves this happiness more congratulations."
While sharing her excitement on air, Amy joked that she is keeping the "family tradition" going by having a bouncing baby boy. She explained: "I have four brothers, loads of boy cousins, and a nephew, Ronan. So naturally it was always going to be a boy, wasn’t it?"
Amy first got her break as she worked on West FM after studying journalism at Glasgow Caledonian University. She then moved to Capital Scotland in 2017, with her credits now including jobs at the BBC and Heart Radio. She also appeared on TV as she took over Jackie Bird's role of hosting BBC's annual Hogmanay party and BBC Sports Personality of the Year. It has yet to be revealed who will be replacing Amy on The Saturday Show when she goes on maternity leave.
