American amazed by Scotland's long summer daylight hours

An American tourist has gone viral on TikTok after sharing his amazement at how bright Scotland stays during the summer months, with locals flooding the comments to express their own love for the phenomenon.

Tourist amazed by extended daylight

Account user @acesup_253 posted a clip on TikTok yesterday (July 13) detailing his trip to Scotland, including exploring a castle and sampling local food. However, what truly blew him away was the length of daylight. He explained: "One thing I noticed here, it is bright a lot! It was 10:15pm and it was still bright out, and then it was 5:15am and it was bright out."

Expressing his amazement, he continued: "That's insane. No where in the States is it like that." Many Scots have since responded, sharing their own appreciation for the brighter months and noting the trade-off during winter.

Scots respond with winter warnings

One person explained: "Welcome to Scotland. We only get 4-5 hours of darkness in summer but the winters are DARK, only 7-8 hours of daylight so we pay for these light nights!" Another wrote: "We are actually pretty far north, people forget that." The clip owner replied: "It threw me off lol... just wasn't ready."

A third commenter confessed: "Love the long days. Get depressed come September when it gets dark around 8." Meanwhile, someone else joked: "We keep the lights on for the tourists."

Food reviews and bacon debate

The American also shared his thoughts on Scottish food, praising fish and chips as "by far the best" and calling the haggis "good." However, he critiqued the breakfast sausages for being too pork-heavy and claimed American bacon is "far superior."

He said: "I had by far the best fish and chips, that sh*t was delicious. The breading on the fish was light, and then I had curry sauce. I give it to y'all, that sh*t was fire. The haggis was good. The sausages... it is a lot of pork, I wish you guys used a little more beef in the breakfast sausages, but it's all been pretty good so far. I don't think I've had any really bad food."

Some Scots disagreed with his bacon assessment. One person claimed: "Your bacon is all fat", followed by a laugh emoji. Another wrote: "Your bacon is not bacon.... It's a lot of fat with teeny bits of actual meat! But you can get streaky bacon here... That's what you are used to."

Recommendations from locals

Other Scots offered food recommendations, including a square sausage for more beef, a deep fried mars bar, and a 'chicken tikka chasni curry in Glasgow'.
