Amanda Holden has hit back at critics who labelled her daughter Lexi a 'nepo-baby' after Lexi signed with Storm modelling agency and walked the catwalk at London Fashion Week in 2024. The term 'nepo-baby' refers to children of celebrities who gain entry into competitive industries due to family connections.
Holden's Defense of Her Daughter
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Holden dismissed the term as unfair. 'Being someone's kid is not going to secure work, make a living for you and longevity in whatever career,' she said. The Britain's Got Talent judge added: 'It may get a foot in the door, but then you're on your own, so I think it's unfair to sort of single out showbusiness or the music industry, because they're the worst businesses to be in!'
Connections in Every Industry
Holden argued that everyone uses connections to advance. She noted that at Global Radio Studios, where she hosts Heart Breakfast, children of employees are welcomed for work experience. 'Everyone has such tenuous connections and it's brilliant, we welcome them with open arms,' she said. She also revealed that her youngest daughter Hollie will participate next year. 'Any kid that I know - if they needed a hand, the door is open. It's not just my own kids, it's my friends' kids.'
The Burden of a Famous Parent
Holden stated that having a famous parent can be a disadvantage. 'I just hate the term nepo baby because it's up to them to make it on their own. And it's often worse having a famous parent, it's not often a good thing.' She added that Hollie is embarrassed by her mother's fame and asks to be dropped off at the end of the road to avoid being seen, though she appreciates perks like attending The Stranger Things premiere.
Holden's Patience Wears Thin
While Holden is patient on-screen, she does not tolerate rude behavior in theaters. She recalled scolding a family during a performance of Wicked. 'I've told people off for making noise. I was watching Wicked and there was this family behind me - they literally had a packed lunch. I said, "You're not in your lounge."' When they looked confused, she added: 'Please put the lid on your sandwich box and watch this amazing performance.'
