Alison Hammond has officially landed a new television presenting job, just days after publicly explaining why she will not be joining the cast of Strictly Come Dancing in the near future. The popular ITV This Morning star, known for her vibrant personality and widespread appeal, has become one of the most sought-after presenters in the industry, with multiple high-profile shows vying for her attention.
New Role on Channel 4's Your Song
Alison Hammond, aged 51, is now set to take centre stage as a presenter on Channel 4's upcoming programme, Your Song. She will be joined by Eurovision sensation Sam Ryder and acclaimed pop star Paloma Faith, forming a dynamic trio to host the new talent show. The series, created by the producers behind The Piano, aims to showcase ordinary people performing songs that hold deep personal significance to them.
Format and Premiere Details
Your Song will feature contestants from across the country battling it out for a grand prize: the opportunity to headline a special performance at the iconic Hackney Empire in London, in front of their friends and family. An official synopsis describes the show as giving "the nation's hidden voices the audience they deserve." The programme is scheduled to launch this Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4, promising an authentic and heartfelt viewing experience.
Reasons for Rejecting Strictly Come Dancing
In a recent interview, Alison Hammond revealed that while Strictly Come Dancing would be a "perfect" fit for her, her packed schedule makes participation unrealistic. She competed on the show in 2014, finishing in tenth place, but has now ruled out a return due to time constraints. Similarly, she has declined offers to appear on Celebrity Traitors, citing clashes with her existing commitments.
Speaking to Radio Times, Alison explained, "I'm so busy that I'm not sure it [Strictly Come Dancing] is going to happen. It's unrealistic. I'm so happy they considered me, but like Traitors, I can’t do it because everything clashes." She added that she would have loved to take part but is content with her current projects, questioning, "What would I drop, to do Strictly?"
Commitment to Authenticity
Alison emphasised the importance of authenticity in Your Song, ensuring the show avoids exploitation and maintains a genuine feel. She told The Sun, "It was important to me that it wasn't exploitative. It's filmed as live. There’s none of that faking it, what you see is the genuine timeline of what goes on." Co-host Sam Ryder echoed this sentiment, stating he would avoid any show with "meanness for meanness' sake" and stressing the need for "human value" in talent programmes.
Despite the volatile nature of television, Alison expressed that she and her co-stars wouldn't be concerned if Your Song "bombed," as they had an "incredible" time during production. She highlighted that participants thoroughly enjoyed the filming process, reinforcing the show's focus on positive experiences over awards or trophies.
Industry Speculation and Future Prospects
Rumours continue to swirl about potential candidates for coveted television roles, with names like Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark, and Alison's This Morning colleague Sian Welby being mentioned. Alison herself recently suggested she would be an ideal replacement for Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, who have fronted Strictly Come Dancing for over a decade. However, for now, her focus remains on her new venture with Channel 4, marking another milestone in her career since rising to fame on Big Brother in 2002.
