Alison Hammond became emotional on This Morning as she recounted finishing last in a 10k run, describing the experience as 'shameful.' Co-host Dermot O'Leary quickly offered support, reassuring her that it was 'not shameful.'
Emotional Moment on This Morning
The presenting duo were back on the ITV talk show on Friday, July 3, stepping in for Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley, who enjoy a three-day weekend. The morning was busy with guests including DJ Fat Tony, who discussed his role at Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding, and journalist Bryony Gordon.
During Bryony Gordon’s appearance, she revealed she had just completed a marathon. This prompted Alison to share her own experience of running a 10k. Alison, who has been open about her weight loss journey after a pre-diabetic health warning, said: 'Let me tell you about this 10K I did, it wasn’t a marathon but it was a marathon to me. At the time I was really – I was quite a big girl. But I did it, I ran it, and I was the last person to come in, it was so shameful.'
Dermot's Supportive Gesture
Noticing Alison becoming visibly emotional, Dermot placed his hand on her arm and told her: 'It's not shameful.' Alison continued: 'Do you know what, the ambulance was behind me, and I could see him going, “come on, Alison, you’re doing it”. And then I looked to the side and this one woman said, “Alison you’re the last one”. And I said, “I know, but at least I did it, babes”.'
Despite coming in last, Alison described the run as one of the biggest achievements of her life. She has been working with a personal trainer and taking up Reformer Pilates and boxing in recent years, often sharing her exercise videos on Instagram.
Alison's Health Journey
Previously speaking to the Radio Times, Alison said: 'I've had a personal trainer for five years, even when I was at my biggest. But I had a childish mentality with regards to food, especially toffees – but now I'll only have a couple a day. We're not getting any younger, are we, babes? You realise at some point you've got to look after yourself. I've got a speaker under my pillow to play relaxing music, and a sleep tracker.'
