Alfie Boe, the celebrated tenor and West End star, has spoken openly about reaching a "dark place" after the breakdown of his marriage, a period that led to his hospitalisation and a five-week stay in a rehabilitation facility.
The 53-year-old, who is from Blackpool and one of nine children, was married to his American wife Sarah, with whom he has two children. They met during rehearsals for the Broadway musical La Bohème in San Francisco but split in 2020.
A Difficult Time After Separation
Two years after the split, Boe appeared on the BBC reality show Freeze the Fear, which saw stars take part in endurance challenges with "Iceman" Wim Hof. During the programme, he opened up about how the separation affected him.
Speaking on the show, Boe said: "When my separation happened initially I went into a really dark place. It's weird to talk about, I've not spoken about this in public, but I'm willing to, if it can help anyone out there that needs that.
"I'd gone through beating myself up and hating myself and not having any love for myself and it resulted in a foolish act of throwing some pills down my throat because I'd lost my way. I ended up in a rehabilitation facility for about five weeks and it was a scary time."
Going Public with New Girlfriend
Boe went Instagram official with his girlfriend Elizabeth Worthington in November 2025, sharing a photo of them enjoying dinner at The Savoy in London. He posted: "Date night at the Savoy with @elizabethwortho Pre haircut before heading out to Shanghai. Miss you x."
Fans responded warmly to the photo, which marked their first shared on social media. One commented: "So pleased for you Alfie you deserve some happiness and You make a lovely couple. Good luck in Shanghai," while another said: "Wishing you health and happiness," and a third branded Elizabeth a "lucky lady".
Worthington, 30, hails from Warrington and works as a business development manager for a used car auction firm based in Hampshire. Since then, the couple have shared a selection of images of themselves together on their separate Instagram accounts, including a day at Wimbledon, watching Liverpool FC and a trip to New York.
On Boe's 53rd birthday in September, his girlfriend posted a selection of images of them together with the caption: "Happy birthday to my best friend. Our number one, and the one I am lucky to do this life with. May this year bring even more laughs, fun and dad dancing. Love you."
Festival of Remembrance Performance
Boe is among the line-up for this year's Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance, performing in front of royalty and veterans at London's Royal Albert Hall. The event, broadcast on BBC One on Saturday, November 7 at 9pm, also features James Emmanuel, Mica Paris, Rita Wilson and Tom Odell, alongside the Band of Royal Air Force Regiment and the Bands of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth (Royal Band) and Collingwood.
He has also recently announced four special concerts for 2027, when he will be joined by three leading ladies from the stage musical Wicked.
