Alex Jones and Roman Kemp were left momentarily lost for words during the latest broadcast of The One Show on Tuesday (June 23). The BBC show returned after being pulled off air on Monday due to World Cup coverage.
Guests on the Show
The duo welcomed several notable guests, including Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer, who discussed their forthcoming comedy series Ride or Die. J.K. Simmons and Tom Brittney also joined to highlight their new drama The Westies.
World Cup Question Backfires
During the latter part of the programme, the presenters chatted with BBC correspondent Kelly Somers ahead of England's Group L fixture against Ghana in Boston. Returning to the studio, Roman asked J.K. Simmons: "I've got to ask you about the tournament as well. I know you're big into other sports that you enjoy, but the World Cup, is it giving you that football buzz?"
J.K.'s frank response left everyone in the studio momentarily speechless: "No!" The presenters erupted into laughter, with Roman remarking: "I really thought we had him there!"
J.K. Simmons Explains His Stance
J.K. elaborated on his position, explaining: "Sorry! I think, you know, I would lose respect for myself if I just jumped on the bandwagon because I'm here and it's the thing. I'm watching my Detroit Tigers the day after they play, which starts at midnight here. I'm a baseball guy and I always will be."
Alex responded: "Each to their own, isn't it?" while Roman added: "Listen, I'm the same with football so I completely get it." Turning to J.K., Alex then quipped: "Get out. No, we're joking," prompting laughter throughout the room.
About The Westies
Oscar winner J.K. Simmons leads the cast of The Westies, a drama focusing on the brutal, real-life Irish-American criminal organisation that dominated Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen area. The official synopsis reads: "The Westies is set in the early 1980s, when the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the Westies' home turf in Hell's Kitchen promises a financial windfall for the Irish-American organised crime gang. Despite being outnumbered 50-to-1 by the Five Families of the Italian mafia, the Westies' legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through fragile détente. However, internal conflict between the brash younger generation and the old-school leadership threatens to set a match to this powder keg, which will sweep the Westies into the FBI's ever-deepening investigation into the Italian mafia."
The One Show airs weeknights on BBC One at 7pm.
