Every day, the Daily Star's agony aunt Jane O'Gorman tackles readers' issues with straight-talking advice. Here are this week's problems.
Boss's obsession
A reader says coworkers claim his boss is obsessed with him, but she treats him harshly—humiliating him in meetings and giving him the worst tasks. A senior colleague suggested the boss fancies him and is furious he has a girlfriend. He worries about his job and the upcoming autumn party where he plans to bring his girlfriend.
Jane says the boss is immature and unprofessional. She advises keeping distance at the party, avoiding alcohol, and documenting everything to report to HR or a union. She notes that if he were bad at his job, he'd have been fired, so the bullying is unacceptable.
Ex won't move on
A divorced woman says her ex, who drank heavily and cheated, now visits regularly for tea but expects intimacy. He becomes upset when she asks him to leave.
Jane says the romantic relationship is over and suggests telling him to leave for good if he becomes a nuisance. She advises calling the police if he harasses her, adding that she owes him nothing.
Ungrateful friend
A reader helped a friend secure compensation after a fall, visiting her daily in hospital. Now the friend rarely contacts her, donated the compensation to charity, and only socializes with family. The reader feels furious at the lack of thanks.
Jane says the reader acted instinctively and kindly. The friend may be embarrassed. Jane advises not bearing a grudge and moving on to stay free from bitterness.
Nosy neighbour
A reader is annoyed by a neighbour who constantly monitors comings and goings, comments on clothing and parking.
Jane suggests rising above the annoyance, being polite, and not justifying oneself. She notes the neighbour might be lonely and could be useful for keeping an eye on the property.
