Lee Brennan, best known as a member of the 1990s pop group 911, has announced he is quitting the music industry to train as an electrician. The 45-year-old singer, who battled Hodgkin Lymphoma twice as a child, said he wants a more stable career after years of touring.
Brennan, who was diagnosed with cancer at age nine and again at 15, revealed that chemotherapy left him infertile. He shared a poignant Instagram post on World Cancer Day, writing: 'Cancer leaves scars, mentally and physically, but I’m alive and love life, that’s all that matters.'
The former pop star is now focusing on charity work, hosting the Shine A Light Ball in Manchester on June 15 to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event, which will feature performances by 911 and B*Witched, is held in memory of his stepfather Stephen McAlindon, who died of lung cancer.
Brennan said he discovered pop music after his cancer treatment dashed his dreams of becoming a footballer. He joined 911 at age 21 and enjoyed chart success before the group disbanded. Despite leaving the music business, Brennan will reunite with bandmates Jimmy Constable and Spike Dawbarn for upcoming tours later this year.
