80s Chart-Topper Glenn Medeiros Makes Surprise TikTok Comeback After Two Decades in Education
A former 1980s pop sensation has unexpectedly returned to public attention through social media, presenting a dramatically changed appearance from his youthful heyday. Glenn Medeiros, now aged 55, first rocketed to international fame in the late 1980s and enjoyed several years of chart dominance before making a complete career shift.
From Radio Competition to Global Stardom
Medeiros launched his music career in 1987 at just sixteen years old after winning a local radio contest in his native Hawaii. His winning performance was a cover of George Benson's classic ballad Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You. A small independent label, impressed by his vocal talent, decided to produce his version commercially.
To everyone's astonishment, the recording became a worldwide phenomenon, peaking at number twelve on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. This transformed the teenager into an overnight international star, with his self-titled debut album releasing later that same year.
Sustained Musical Success and Chart Achievements
His second album, Not Me, followed in 1988, cementing his place in pop music. Medeiros achieved particular success in France with the duet Un Roman d'amitié (Friend You Give Me a Reason), performed with French artist Elsa Lunghini, which held the number one position for six consecutive weeks.
Over his career, he released a total of nine studio albums. Other notable hits included She Ain't Worth It, a collaboration with Bobby Brown that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold, and Under Any Moon, featured on the soundtrack for Karate Kid Part III.
A Complete Career Transformation to Education
Despite this sustained success, Medeiros stepped away from the music industry following the release of his 2005 album With Aloha. He embarked on an entirely new professional path in the field of education.
He pursued higher education with dedication, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii at West O'ahu, followed by a master's in elementary education from the University of Phoenix. In 2014, he completed a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Southern California.
The former teen heartthrob has since spent years working as a school principal in Honolulu, while raising his two children, daughter Lyric and son Chord, with his wife Tammy.
An Unrecognisable Return via Daughter's TikTok
Now, more than two decades after leaving the spotlight, Medeiros has reemerged in a series of videos posted to the TikTok account of his 24-year-old daughter, Lyric. His appearance is strikingly different from his 1980s image, leading many followers to note he is practically unrecognisable.
Lyric, who has followed in her father's musical footsteps by competing on shows like American Idol, revealed that it took until her middle school years to fully grasp her father's former fame. "I remember adults coming up to me and saying, 'Oh, Medeiros! Like Glenn Medeiros, the guy who sang that love song!'" she recalled to the Today show. "And then they start singing it in front of me. Older women would come up to me and say, 'Oh, he was a heartthrob!'"
She humorously admitted that convincing her dad to participate in her videos is no small feat. "It's a rare occasion to have my dad willingly film a video with me," Lyric explained. "Most of the time, I just ask him to stand in the video while I do a trending sound or something like that."
Medeiros himself confirmed his reluctance, stating, "It's not my first choice of things to do. I'm not really so much into doing the videos, and so every time she asks me to go on, I'm like, 'All right, OK.' I'm not much of a dancer, you know, and Lyric's a good dancer, so I try to have fun with it as much as I can."
This unexpected digital reappearance highlights the remarkable journey of a pop icon who traded chart success for the classroom, only to find a new, albeit reluctant, generation of fans through his daughter's social media.
