15.8M peak viewers watch Spain beat Argentina in World Cup final

Nearly 16 million viewers tuned in to watch Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 Fifa World Cup final on the BBC, according to overnight ratings. The tense final attracted a peak audience of 15.8 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with an average audience of 13.9 million across the match. The BBC commanded a 64% share of all TV viewing during the broadcast.

ITV and streaming figures

ITV and ITVX also saw strong viewership, with an audience peak across devices of 3.8 million. On BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, the final was streamed 11.1 million times, including 2.4 million ultra high definition (UHD) streams on BBC iPlayer.

Third-place play-off and tournament reach

Saturday’s third-place play-off between England and France, which ended in a 6-4 win for England, saw a peak audience of 11.8 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with an average of 10.8 million. England's bronze medal was their best finish in a men's World Cup since 1966.

BBC live text coverage on its sport website and app was viewed more than 18.8 million times globally during the final, including 14.2 million views in the UK. Across the whole tournament, the BBC reached a total of 42.8 million viewers on TV, with World Cup matches streamed 237 million times on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app—more than double the figures for the 2022 World Cup.
