Rare Sherlock Holmes First Edition Fetches Over £11,500 at Bonhams Auction

A highly sought-after first edition novel from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic Sherlock Holmes series has been sold at auction for a remarkable sum exceeding £10,000. The book, titled The Sign of Four, is the second instalment in the globally celebrated detective series and achieved a final hammer price of £11,520 during a sale at Bonhams auction house on Thursday.

Discovery in a Charity Bookshop

The valuable volume was originally discovered at an Oxfam bookshop located in Shrewsbury, where it had been donated by a generous regular supporter. Tom Cotton, the manager of the Oxfam bookshop in Shrewsbury, commented on the find, stating: "The book was donated by a very generous, regular donor who had always been delighted to see his books valued highly and placed in our cabinets."

He added humorously: "Initially, I could tell the book was special – it was an early Sherlock Holmes story. However, when it comes to appraising antiquarian books, I do not have the power of deduction like Sherlock Holmes – I’m more of a Mrs Hudson. Determining the value was a real group effort."

Historical Significance and Provenance

Published in 1890, this first edition features the original red cloth binding from its publisher. Notably, it contains a bookplate indicating its previous ownership by James Burgess Boote of Gwernaffel, Knighton, who served as the High Sheriff for Radnorshire. This provenance adds to the book's historical and collectible value.

The Sign of Four follows the adventures of the eccentric fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, a character created by the Scottish-born author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the 19th century. The series has inspired countless adaptations, including the popular BBC television series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Proceeds Supporting Humanitarian Causes

Ian Falkingham of Oxfam highlighted the positive impact of such sales, explaining: "The proceeds from books donated and sold via Oxfam go directly towards our work – whether that’s delivering life-saving aid in conflict zones or helping to provide clean water for communities that desperately need it."

He further remarked: "A sale like this one is a reminder that extraordinary impact can come from unexpected places, and as Holmes himself knew, the most important evidence is often hiding in plain sight. We’d encourage anyone to donate their books to Oxfam, or come and browse – you never know what you might find."

The successful auction underscores the enduring popularity and cultural significance of the Sherlock Holmes series, while also demonstrating how charitable donations can yield substantial benefits for vital humanitarian efforts worldwide.
