Julia Donaldson Announces 'Gruffalo Granny' Sequel After 20-Year Wait

In a delightful surprise for fans worldwide, acclaimed children's author Julia Donaldson has officially announced a new addition to the cherished Gruffalo series. The upcoming book, titled Gruffalo Granny, will be released on 10 September 2026, ending a hiatus of over two decades since the last Gruffalo story was published.

A Long-Awaited Return to the Deep Dark Wood

Donaldson shared the exciting news during an appearance on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, revealing that the idea for this sequel has been brewing for nearly twenty years. "I've had this idea for the best part of two decades, but I've been so busy writing other things," she explained. The author, now a grandmother to nine grandchildren, noted that this personal milestone served as a key inspiration. "Now I'm a granny. I've got nine grandchildren so I guess that's spurred me on," she added, highlighting how her own life experiences influenced the new narrative.

Plot Details and Creative Collaborations

Gruffalo Granny will introduce a new family member to the series, following the 2004 sequel The Gruffalo's Child, which itself expanded on the original 1999 hit. The story begins with the line: "The Gruffalo said to his daughter one day, 'Your Gruffalo granny is coming to stay'." Publisher Macmillan has confirmed that beloved characters from the first two books will return for what promises to be an exciting new adventure.

Illustrator Axel Scheffler, who brought the Gruffalo to life in the previous installments, will once again provide the artwork. Scheffler expressed his astonishment at the project, stating, "I've been saying for over 20 years there won't be a sequel, and it's taught me to never say never. It was a complete surprise for me, but Julia came up with such a wonderful story." An initial illustration of the new character is set to be unveiled later on Friday, 6 February 2026.

Overcoming Creative Hurdles and Global Impact

Donaldson admitted that developing the story posed challenges initially. "I actually had the basic idea for the story a long time ago, but couldn't think how to develop it," she said in a statement. The breakthrough came when the National Literacy Trust incorporated the first two Gruffalo books into their Early Words Matter programme. "I was spurred on to get my idea out of the cupboard and see once and for all if I could turn it into a really satisfying story. To my surprise, I managed to do just that!" she remarked.

The Gruffalo series has achieved remarkable success, with over 18 million copies sold globally and translations into more than 100 languages and dialects. The original book, written in rhyming couplets, follows a clever mouse who outwits predators by inventing a fearsome creature—the Gruffalo—with features like "terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws."

Legacy and Adaptations

The franchise's popularity extends beyond print, with notable adaptations including an Oscar-nominated animated short for BBC One in 2009, featuring voices from James Corden, Rob Brydon, and Helena Bonham Carter. A follow-up adaptation of The Gruffalo's Child in 2011 earned a BAFTA nomination, cementing the series' place in children's entertainment.

Donaldson expressed her enthusiasm for the new release, saying, "I'm delighted Axel has returned to the series with me and hope that children—and adults too—will enjoy the new story." With its blend of nostalgia and fresh creativity, Gruffalo Granny is poised to captivate a new generation of readers while delighting long-time fans.
