Colin Kaepernick to Release Memoir 'The Perilous Fight' in September 2026
Activist and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will publish his highly anticipated memoir, The Perilous Fight, on September 15, 2026. The announcement comes nearly ten years after his iconic decision to kneel during the national anthem, a protest against police violence and racial injustice that ignited a nationwide conversation.
A Decade of Reflection and Context
Kaepernick, who has not played in the NFL since 2016, stated that the book aims to provide deeper context for his protest. "People saw the moment. But they didn't see the years that made it possible," he explained in a statement released on Tuesday. "That journey, from a Black kid navigating an identity the world didn't always make space for, to an athlete who realized the game was bigger than football, shaped everything."
The memoir, published through the Hachette Book Group imprint Legacy Lit, is described as "equal parts memoir and manifesto." It will trace the off-the-field experiences that transformed a solitary act of protest into a cultural movement, reshaping American sports and society.
From the Field to a Movement
Kaepernick's protest began during a 2016 preseason game when he first remained seated, then knelt during the anthem. This act was emulated by other players but also faced sharp criticism from politicians, team owners, and fans, some of whom booed him and burned his jersey. His memoir promises to explore the personal and societal forces that led to this defining moment.
Now 38, Kaepernick played six seasons with the 49ers, notably helping lead the team to Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, where they narrowly lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31. Since leaving the NFL, he has remained a prominent voice on social issues, launching his own publishing imprint and co-authoring works like the picture story We Are Free, You & Me and the graphic novel Change the Game.
The Perilous Fight marks his most personal project yet, offering readers an intimate look at the life and convictions behind one of modern sport's most influential figures.
