A social media taste test comparing eight supermarket salmon fillets has revealed that budget-friendly options can rival premium ones. The tester, Becca, ranked the fillets to determine if price affects quality.
Budget Salmon Surprises
Aldi's Essential salmon, priced at £2.99 per pack, impressed Becca despite some 'very skinny' pieces. She praised its 'decent taste', 'meaty' texture, and 'buttery' flakiness, scoring it 8.5 out of 10. She noted that with eyes closed, she wouldn't know it was value salmon.
In contrast, Sainsbury's Stanford Street Co fillets at £3.49 were deemed 'tasteless'. Aldi's standard salmon fillets at £3.59 scored an impressive 9.5 out of 10.
Mid-Range Options Falter
Sainsbury's standard salmon at £4.95 also lacked flavour, scoring just 5 out of 10. However, M&S Caledonian Gold salmon at the same price earned a perfect 10, with Becca comparing it to a steak.
Tesco's slightly more expensive fillets at £5.15 for 20 grams more fish didn't impress, scoring 4 out of 10 due to a 'gamy' taste that didn't resemble salmon.
Premium Picks Shine
Among the most expensive options, Russell's Organic salmon fillets from Ocado at £9.25 scored 9 out of 10, with an 'earthy' and 'meaty' flavour. Tesco Finest Sockeye Salmon Fillets at £9.45, the only wild-caught option, also scored 9 out of 10 for its 'well-rounded' taste.
The £10 Loch Fyne salmon fillets from Ocado, the only smoked option, earned a perfect 10. Becca described it as 'unlike any of the others' and '100% worth the money', though she noted it's a treat for special occasions like a date night dinner.
