Wonka chocolate has returned to stores after a 21-year hiatus, and a taste test of the new range reveals a mix of delightful surprises and disappointing misses. The range includes a Wonka Kinder Joy Egg, Oompa Loompa Gummies, a Magic Garden treat, a Purpleypurple Milk Chocolate Bar, an Oompa Loompa Milk Chocolate Hollow Figurine, and Magic Hats.
New Wonka range marks return after 21 years
The new Wonka range arrives as Netflix releases Wonka's The Golden Ticket, a one-of-a-kind competition. The range features a variety of creations beyond the traditional chocolate bar, aiming to evoke nostalgia for the 2005 Tim Burton film starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.
The Wonka Kinder Joy Egg, priced at £1.60, combines smooth cocoa and milky cream layers with crispy wafer bites, and includes exclusive Kinder Joy × Wonka Funko toys, such as the Golden Wonka. The taste tester, who had never tried a Kinder Joy before, called it delicious but noted it was a little small for the price.
Taste test: gummies, chocolate bars, and more
The Wonka Oompa Loompa Gummies, at £2.30, are shaped like the iconic Oompa Loompas and feature blueberry and strawberry flavours with a surprising raspberry-cola liquid centre. The tester praised them as very delicious and moreish, especially when the gooey liquid centre is revealed upon biting.
The Wonka Magic Garden, also £2.30, offers chewy lime-flavoured ropes with a surprise lemon taste inside. However, the tester was not a fan, stating, "Lemon and lime are not my thing, and these were no exception."
Chocolate bars and figurines impress
The Wonka Purpleypurple Milk Chocolate Bar, at £3.75, features smooth milk chocolate with a surprising purple caramel-flavoured milky filling. The tester described it as "seriously tasty" and "genuinely mind-blowingly good," adding they would buy it again.
The Wonka Oompa Loompa Milk Chocolate Hollow Figurine, priced at £4.50, is made from smooth, creamy milk chocolate with fine details, including vibrant green hair and striking white brows. The tester said it was "pretty nice" and gave off Easter egg vibes, recommending it for those who long for that treat all year round.
Magic Hats disappoint with unexpected flavors
The final item, Wonka Magic Hats at £7.65, is a sharing assortment of chocolate shells with fillings in flavours such as Caramellion, Chocolonka, Magenta Elixir, and Choco Fizz. The tester was disappointed, noting, "Sadly, it wasn't what I expected. If I could just get the normal chocolate and dark chocolate praline one, I'd be so pleased. But the Choco Fizz was a cola surprise that I did not want."
