Winchester crowned UK's best Christmas market for 2026 by Lonely Planet
Winchester named UK's best Christmas market for 2026

Lonely Planet has named Winchester's Christmas market the UK's best for 2026, praising its traditional festive offerings and elegant setting on the grounds of the city's cathedral.

The publication included the market in a list of Europe's finest, highlighting its timber chalets, artisan products, and the backdrop of one of Britain's most magnificent medieval cathedrals. The market is described as "incredibly tasteful," with baubled trees, family craft workshops, and stalls selling hand-carved music boxes, artisan cheese, bean-to-bar chocolate, and hand-blown glass.

What Lonely Planet said

Lonely Planet noted: "Gazes are lifted in wonder to the soaring spires of one of Britain’s most magnificent medieval cathedrals at Winchester’s Christmas market. After a romp around the city’s decorous Elizabethan and Regency streets, the market in the cathedral’s historic grounds beckons."

"Taking a leaf out of the traditional German book, it’s all incredibly tasteful, with baubled trees, family craft workshops and timber chalets selling everything from hand-carved music boxes to artisan cheese, bean-to-bar chocolate and hand-blown glass. For more festive spirit still, time your visit to catch one of the cathedral’s Christmas concerts."

Dates and opening hours

This year's market runs from Friday, 20 November, until Tuesday, 22 December, with free entry. On Fridays and Saturdays it opens from 10am to 8pm, and from Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 6pm.

Set within the grounds of Winchester Cathedral, the market draws crowds from across the UK. Besides browsing stalls and tasting delicacies, visitors can attend Advent and Christmas services in the cathedral.

Visitor feedback

One traveller who visited last year shared on TripAdvisor: "We had an impromptu visit to Winchester after visiting family. We were lucky enough to be able to visit the Christmas market while we were there. It was very, very busy, but most definitely worth visiting. There were plenty of unique Christmas gifts at reasonable prices. I would definitely recommend The home-made brownie company!!"
