A new survey has revealed that Horny Old Road, Minge Lane, Bell End and Cock Hill Lane are among the UK’s rudest place names. The poll, conducted for Asda Money, found that cheeky road names have put off two thirds of Brits, with six in 10 missing their turn or exit due to laughing and one in three nearly having an accident.
Funny names cause distraction
More than half of Brits think that the UK has some of the funniest road and village titles in the world, but they can also be a distraction for drivers. One in three (29%) have even used a funny place name as a reason to visit an area.
Asda Money has temporarily put “modesty” curtains over signs to keep motorists’ eyes on the road. The campaign is a helping hand from Asda Money, which launches its new car insurance this month in partnership with Allianz.
Other distractions behind the wheel
Funny road names are just one of the distractions competing for drivers’ attention. Overall, 76% admit they get distracted behind the wheel, doing so an average of five times during an hour-long journey. Alongside road signs, talkative passengers (32%), stunning scenery (30%), passengers continuously pointing things out (27%), yawning or tiredness (26%) and singing along to the radio (25%) all make the list.

Britain's rudest place names
The survey also compiled a list of the UK's rudest place names, with Sluts Hole Lane in Norfolk topping the list at 38%, followed by Butthole Lane in Leicestershire (37%) and Bell End in Rowley Regis (36%). Other notable entries include Twatt in Orkney (35%), The Knob in Northamptonshire (33%), Minge Lane in Worcestershire (32%), and Sandy Balls in the New Forest (32%).
Further down the list are Cock-A-Dibby in Berkshire (31%), Slag Lane in Merseyside (30%), Fanny Avenue in Derbyshire (29%), Cocks in Cornwall (29%), Back Passage in the City of London (28%), Shitterton in Dorset (28%), Titty Hill in West Sussex (27%), and Fanny Hands Lane in Lincolnshire (26%).
Happy Bottom in Dorset (26%), Cock Hill Lane in Birmingham (25%), Titty Ho in Northamptonshire (25%), Fingringhoe in Essex (24%), Wetwang in Yorkshire (24%), Crotch Crescent in Oxford (23%), and Slack Bottom in West Yorkshire (23%) also feature. Jackass Lane in Kent (20%), Dumb Woman’s Lane in East Sussex (20%), Pratts Bottom in Greater London (20%), Great Snoring in Norfolk (19%), Twatling Road in Birmingham (18%), and Fine Bush Lane in Ruislip (17%) round out the list.
Butt Hill Road in South Yorkshire (17%), Hornyold Road in Worcestershire (17%), Letsby Avenue in South Yorkshire (15%), Nickey Nackey Lane in Surrey (14%), North Piddle in Worcestershire (12%), Penistone in Barnsley, South Yorkshire (10%), and Piddlehinton in Dorset (7%) complete the ranking.
