East Kilbride golfer Scott Jamieson received a call of congratulations from US President Donald Trump after earning his first title win for 14 years.
The 42-year-old, formerly of East Mains and now residing in Florida, was back on home soil this week to play in the Nexo Championship at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire. He took the title by two strokes from England's Matthew Jordan, finishing on -11.
Presidential congratulations
After picking up his first trophy on the tour since his maiden win back in 2012 at the Nelson Mandela Championships in South Africa, President Trump was picking up the phone to send his congratulations in what is now a tradition at the tournament.
Jamieson was left pleasantly surprised, telling the BBC: “He was very complimentary and it sounds like he was actually watching it,” Jamieson told BBC Sport Scotland. “He said he was following along, so it was really cool... I mean he is the President of the United States.”
Tour card secured
The victory for the honorary Cathkin Braes Golf Club member was made all the more special by the fact it will help him keep his Tour card.
After a number of years of struggle and strife, Jamieson had plummeted down the ranks from a career high of 68 to 465th. But his triumph at the Trump International has seen him soar back up to 267th.
Jamieson added: “I didn’t realise it had been 14 years [since the last title]
“I practice every day and explore different ways to get better and sometimes it is like you are just banging your head against a wall.
“So the odd win here and there makes it all worthwhile.
“There have been times where I've thought 'I might be losing my job here' so thankfully I don't need to worry about that over the next few weeks.
“And hopefully this may open up some doors to kick on and try and push up the ladder.”
