Fans demand Ann Droid Christmas special after Mrs Brown's Boys axed

BBC viewers are calling for the comedy Ann Droid to return with a Christmas special after it was confirmed Mrs Brown's Boys would not air new festive episodes this year.

Diane Morgan's six-part series concluded on Friday, following the Cunk on Earth star as Linda, a social humanoid robot who forms an unlikely friendship with Sue Johnston's character, Sue. The show explored the rise of AI in society, asking: “What is replaceable and what is not?”

Linda entered Sue's life after the death of her husband David, when her son Michael, played by Motherland's Paul Ready, moved out to try to fix his marriage. Although Sue initially wanted to live independently and saw Linda as her worst nightmare, the pair became friends and shared an emotional reunion at the series' end.

Mrs Brown's Boys cancelled due to health issues

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Mrs Brown's Boys would not return for Christmas and New Year specials because of Brendan O'Carroll's health. The 70-year-old writer and actor said the recordings had to be cancelled after he needed “immediate surgery” on a broken jaw.

He said: "It is with sincere regret I must announce that due to an unexpected medical issue I will have to cancel the recordings of the 2026 Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas and New Year's Specials."

Following a CT scan, he said he had two fractures in his mandible, which required immediate surgery and a few months of recovery. He added that he had been in conversations with the BBC about “getting Mrs Brown’s Boys back on the screen in 2027”.

Fans call for Ann Droid return

After Brendan's update, actress Sue posted on social media: “Surely the BBC should be calling Diane Morgan for an #AnnDroid Christmas special?!”

Viewers responded enthusiastically. One person replied: “ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! We need more Ann Droid!!!!” Another wrote: “omg, yes!!! I'm still living in Ann Droid world. I laughed and delighted SO MUCH at it. God, imagine the fun you could create doing a Christmas & its human traditions with Linda & the others. NO SAD ending though - the last one pained my [heart] a bit too much.”

One fan said: “I’d take that... #AnnDroid has been the best BBC sitcom for years.” Another added: “Yes, absolutely agree. To be honest, I’m surprised they haven’t already commissioned a Christmas special.”

Other comments included: “Now there’s a very good idea, Christmas and New Year special,” “Couldn’t agree more! Binge watched #AnnDroid in one evening. Loved it. Longer episodes needed!” and “Absolutely! A one hour special!!”

Another viewer wrote: "I'd love to see Ann and Sue at Christmas Come on #BBC you know if makes sense!" while one said: “I would rather watch Ann Droid than Mrs Brown’s Boys.”

Ann Droid is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
