A major fire tore through a car park used by Gatwick Airport passengers at Caldyne Business Park in Rowfant, West Sussex, destroying vehicles and a workshop. Firefighters were called shortly before 9pm on Saturday 22 August, and a 67-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and released on bail.
Blaze destroys vehicles and workshop
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the fire involved a workshop, a number of vehicles — including electric and heavy goods vehicles — and cylinders. Several cars belonged to holiday parking operators, and affected customers have been advised to contact their provider directly.
Sussex Police confirmed the arrest and said the man has been bailed pending further enquiries. No injuries were reported.
Power cut and road closures
UK Power Networks cut electricity to more than 2,000 properties while crews tackled the blaze, affecting businesses and homes. Nearby roads were closed as a precaution. Vulnerable residents were supported by West Sussex County Council's Resilience and Emergencies Team, and power has since been restored.
Investigation ongoing
Fire crews remained on site on Monday 24 August damping down hotspots, with teams expected to leave later that day. A joint fire investigation is being carried out by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "On Saturday (22 August) at 8.56pm we were alerted to fire at Wallage Lane in Rowfant." The spokesperson added: "Fortunately there were no casualties as a result of this fire."
Sussex Police are appealing for anyone with information to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 1504 of 22/08. The public are advised to avoid the area while emergency services remain on scene.
