Amélia Jones, 14, died after collapsing at Grampound Road Cricket Club near Truro, Cornwall, on Thursday evening (August 20). Her family has paid tribute to a 'wonderful' and 'unique' teenager who will be 'forever loved and forever remembered'.
Family tribute to 'cherished twin'
Her family described her as 'a deeply loved daughter, sister, friend, and cherished twin of Charlotte' who 'brought so much happiness to the people around her'. She loved 'netball and cricket, and had so many interests' which made her 'wonderfully and uniquely' herself.
Last week, Amélia captained the Cornwall Girls Under-14s against Glamorgan, showing how 'talented, confident, and determined' she was. Her family said her passing has 'left an unimaginable void' in the lives of everyone who knew her.
Organ donation and fundraiser
Amélia's uncle, Sean Jones, told CornwallLive that her organs were donated to help other families in need. A GoFundMe page set up by her uncle to help with funeral costs had reached over £11,000 of its £16,000 target at the time of reporting. Sean added: 'Any extra funds will be donated to a suitable charity.'
Club statement
Emergency services were called to the cricket club after reports that a young girl had collapsed. She was taken to Derriford Hospital via air ambulance but sadly passed away. The cricket club described the incident as 'tragic', adding that Amélia's death was believed to be medically related and not connected to cricket.
A cricket club spokesperson said: 'It is with profound sadness that Grampound Road Cricket Club can confirm a tragic incident took place on Thursday evening. A teenage girl collapsed and was taken to hospital, but has now sadly died. This is believed to be a medical incident not connected to cricket.'
Club Chair Lewis Sanders added: 'Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends and everyone who knew and loved her at this unimaginably difficult time. We will respect the family's privacy and ask others to do the same. We would also like to thank all those who responded on Thursday evening, particularly those who provided immediate first aid and the emergency services including the Cornwall Air Ambulance.'
