East Ayrshire Council has issued a statement saying it is “deeply saddened” by the death of Councillor William Crawford. Councillor Crawford, a Labour Party member, passed away peacefully earlier today (Monday, September 28) after a long illness.
Over 23 years of service
Councillor Crawford was first elected to serve East Ayrshire Council in May 2003 representing Cumnock West, and from May 2007 he represented Ward 8 - Cumnock and New Cumnock. He held several key positions within the Council, including being a member of the Licensing Board, Grants Committee, Planning Committee, and Local Government Licensing Panel.
He was also Director of East Ayrshire Coalfield Community Federation and East Ayrshire Coalfield Community Transport for the last 14 years, and a member of various external organisations including Ayrshire Valuation Joint Board, Industrial Communities Alliance, and Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Joint Committee.
Political leaders pay tribute
Councillor Barry Douglas, Leader of the Labour Opposition Group, said: “Billy was a stalwart of the Labour Group and he was a passionate advocate for his constituents in Cumnock, New Cumnock and Ochiltree. He served his community with distinction for over 23 years and as a proud miner, one of the best contributions I’ve ever seen in the Council Chamber was when Billy spoke about the Miners' strike and the impact it had on our coalfield communities.
“The thoughts of the Labour Group and wider Labour Movement are with Wilma, Pamela, Andrew, Rory and all the family at this very sad time.”
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council, said: “Everyone at East Ayrshire Council is deeply saddened by the passing of Councillor Billy Crawford. With over 23 years’ service, we shared a commitment to improving the lives of our communities, he was a true public servant.
“I know he will be sadly missed, particularly by my Depute and fellow former Miner, Councillor Jim McMahon. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”
Colleagues remember a 'true public servant'
Councillor Neill Watts, Leader of the Conservative Group, said: “As a fellow Elected Member for the Cumnock and New Cumnock ward, I had the privilege of working with Councillor Billy Crawford on local issues as well as working closely with him on issues affecting every community in East Ayrshire. I can attest to the fact that he was a true public servant, committed to introducing positive change and challenging the status quo. He conducted himself with humour and was always respectful to others’ views despite political differences.
“Our sincere condolences and our prayers are with his family and friends at this time.”
Councillor William Crawford died peacefully after a long illness and is survived by his wife Wilma, adult sons, Andrew and Rory, and daughter, Pamela.
