Strictly fans spot Icons Week issue as leaderboard ties

Strictly Come Dancing fans have pointed out an 'issue' with Icons Week after some legendary singers were seen dancing around the ballroom as they were channelled by the remaining contestants. The latest instalment of the BBC dancing competition opened on Saturday night (October 17) with the judges dressed as pop culture figures, with Craig Revel Horwood and Anton Du Beke channelling Britpop band Oasis.

The pair sported khaki parkas and bowl cuts to resemble the Burnage-born Gallagher brothers, while Motsi Mabuse was dressed as Beyonce and Shirley Ballas wore an extravagant ensemble and blonde wig as Lady Gaga. The celebrities were then introduced as their "icon" alter egos, with EastEnders actress Lacey Turner appearing as Adele, while TV presenter Will Best looked like Sir Elton John.

Only 12 couples danced after Delta Goodrem injury

But there were only 12 out of the 13 remaining couples in the competition who took to the dance floor after it was announced that Delta Goodrem was injured and had received a bye to next week, when it is hoped she and Kai Widdrington will dance again. Presenters Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe offered their well-wishes to the Australian singer at the start of the show.

"Delta, my darling, we know you will be watching at home tonight. I just want to say we are all sending you so much love," Johannes said. Jaime Winstone impressed as her Icons Week routine was hailed as "the best thing she has done in the competition so far" as she wowed the judges.

Jaime Winstone tops leaderboard with 34

She and her professional partner, Carlos Gu, channelled David Bowie for their routine, which impressed the judges and earned them a score of 34. The pair danced a paso doble to Bowie's hit Let's Dance, which judge Motsi Mabuse praised as "clever and beautiful", and described as "like a work of art".

Fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood agreed that the dance was "fantastic" and Anton Du Beke said: "That was the best thing you've done in this whole competition, it was absolutely great. The floor spin went on and on – it was just immense. I loved it, well done." Jaime, whose famous father, Ray Winstone, was cheering her on from the sidelines, shared the top of the leaderboard with Love Island's Cach Mercer and Maddie Ingoldsby, who also scored 34 for their "brilliant" foxtrot to Theme From New York, New York by Frank Sinatra.

Fans question whether celebrities chose their own icons

Elsewhere, it was a special night for Big Brother presenter Will Best as he and pro partner Dianne Buswell ended the show with a jive to Crocodile Rock by Sir Elton, which earned them 31 points. Will received praise after he welcomed his baby boy earlier this week, with the judges and his dance partner acknowledging his efforts while juggling a newborn. The broadcaster was also presented with a onesie which read "Tiny Dancer", referencing both his Strictly gig and Sir Elton's hit song.

But it seems Strictly fans thought there was a slight problem with the themed week, as it was clear that not everyone was performing as - and to - an artist they know and love. @absolutelyamyyy said: "Wait?!? Do the celebrities not choose their own icon for icons week?! #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing (Based on what Josh said about Cach not knowing who Frank Sinatra was until this week?!)."

@SocialMediaJon1 wrote: "'Ok so none of the contestants actually looked like any of their icons, we made Graeme look like Rod Hull, Jaime look like Kat Slater and Will look like Jim Carey - It's ok though I don't think the audience noticed' #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing." @superTV247 posted: "Is icons week not for the celebrities to dance to THEIR icons?? Why is Cache doing someone he's never heard of / can't even say #Strictly." @harry_shumjr added: "As good as this week is, aren't they meant to be dancing to their own musical icons? Otherwise this could just be any other week but without the fancy costumes #Strictly."
