Sir Tom Jones has sent a message to fans after tens of thousands of people signed a petition wanting him to be reinstated in his role on The Voice UK.
The legendary Welsh singer, 86, was seen in his role as a coach on the ITV singing series on Saturday (September 19) night alongside Kelly Rowland, will.i.am, and McFly duo Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones as the latest run of competition continued.
Reports of Shake-Up
However, recent reports suggested his role on The Voice UK was at risk due to a shake-up. Following the rumours that he might not be back for the 2027 series, which last week was being filmed in Manchester, Sir Tom said he was "not thrilled" about what ITV offered him instead of being a coach, and claimed they had "made the decision" to "fire" him.
After Tom, who has served as an on-off coach on the popular singing competition since its 2012 debut, hit back, a show spokesperson said: "We have loved working with Sir Tom Jones over the past nine years on The Voice UK. While he will no longer be a full-time coach on series 15, we continue to talk to Sir Tom and his team about his involvement in the next series."
Cheryl and Aitch Join Panel
It was then announced that Girls Aloud star Cheryl has joined the coaching panel for the next series alongside Manchester rapper and fellow newcomer Aitch. They will replace Sir Tom, as well as Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher, and will join returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
But following the changes, Sir Tom's fans have joined together and have set up a Change.org petition to see him back on the show for the next series, with the creator arguing that his "presence has been integral to the chemistry and success of the programme" and that to no longer have him in the coaching line-up "has not only disappointed millions of his fans but has also deprived aspiring singers of the chance to be guided by someone of his stature and expertise."
Petition Passes 59,000 Signatures
When the MEN first wrote about the petition last week, 48,000 people had pledged their support. By Monday (September 21), more than 59,000 signatures have racked up.
In response to the support, Sir Tom was seen posting a message on Instagram on Saturday (September 19) alongside a clip of him singing 'It's Not Unusual' during the latest episode of The Voice UK. He wrote: "It’s Not Unusual…So many heartfelt messages, comments and even petitions of support. It doesn’t go unnoticed and it’s been really lovely to receive these! Thank you!"
And fans rushed to show their support. sirtomjones_fans_exclusive said: "Listening to Sir Tom is absolutely magical.Thank you for sharing Sir Tom #onehellofasinger." @sallyseabass commented: "He’s the original and the best." @hjg4love34 wrote: "A crime has been committed! How can you let this icon and legend of talent go?! I do not understand. That VOICE is The Voice!"
