The 2026 Academy Awards nominations have been announced, with the horror film Sinners breaking a long-standing record. The American film, directed by Ryan Coogler, received 16 nominations, surpassing the previous record of 14 held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.
Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South and confront a supernatural evil. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo.
Director Ryan Coogler described the achievement as 'pretty crazy', telling Deadline: 'I did not have any expectations when it came to the recognition of what they [the team] did. For me, people just showing up to the movies and having a good time, that would’ve been enough.' He added that he was 'so thankful that everybody said yes to this movie.'
The most nominated films after Sinners were One Battle After Another with 13 nods, followed by Sentimental Value, Frankenstein and Marty Supreme with nine each, and Hamnet with eight. In the best actor category, nominees include Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan and Wagner Moura. Best actress nominees include Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, hosted by Conan O'Brien. The ceremony will be broadcast on ITV1 and streamed on ITVX, with timings to be confirmed.
