Royal Ascot Bans Trainers: Strict Dress Code Rules

For anyone planning to attend Royal Ascot this year, there are some essential rules to know, including the strict dress code that could see you refused entry. A certain item of clothing is banned.

Trainers Completely Prohibited

Throughout the year, many eagerly anticipate events like Royal Ascot. The prestigious horse racing occasion, held annually at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, draws thousands of racegoers. However, there are important rules to be aware of before entering the gates.

A travel creator, known as Travel Viva on TikTok, shared essential tips for attendees. While some advice is straightforward, she highlighted a key rule: what you are permitted to wear. One common wardrobe staple is strictly off-limits.

Among her top tips: "Don't break the dress code. No trainers, hats required." Making a simple fashion mistake could lead to entry refusal. Trainers, sneakers, and sports footwear are strictly prohibited in all enclosures.

Dress Code Varies by Enclosure

The rules vary depending on the enclosure. In the Royal Enclosure and Queen Anne Enclosure, guests must wear highly formal attire such as morning dress or smart suits, with traditional closed-toe dress shoes mandatory.

In the Village and Windsor Enclosure, the dress code is less strict but still requires smart daywear. Trainers, denim, and shorts are not permitted.

The official website states: "Styling your summer occasionwear is an integral part of the Royal Ascot tradition, woven into the very essence of the event. Each enclosure at Royal Ascot upholds its own distinguished dress code. We kindly encourage you to familiarise yourself with the guidelines specific to your enclosure prior to your visit."

When is Royal Ascot?

This year, Royal Ascot runs for five consecutive days from Tuesday, June 16 to Saturday, June 20, at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire. The event draws over 250,000 spectators across its five-day festival, making it one of the most well-attended sporting occasions in the country.

The website lists items not permitted in any dress code: fancy dress, novelty patterns and fabrics (including slogans, phrases, promotional messaging, brand logos, or cartoon imagery), trainers, denim, leggings, and shorts.
