Real Madrid have officially announced the sensational return of Jose Mourinho as the club's new manager. The Portuguese coach has been appointed to replace Alvaro Arbeloa and has signed a two-year contract.
Mourinho's Second Stint at the Bernabeu
Mourinho, 63, returns to Real Madrid for a second spell, having previously managed the club between 2010 and 2013. During his first tenure, he led Los Blancos to a La Liga title and the Spanish Cup.
A club statement confirmed: "The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as the first team's head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029. José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins."
Recent Campaign with Benfica
Before his move was finalized, Mourinho ended his campaign with current side Benfica. The Portuguese team finished the season unbeaten but could only manage a third-place finish.
Since his first spell at Real Madrid, Mourinho has also managed Chelsea (second stint), Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and Fenerbahce.
Real Madrid's Decision
Real president Florentino Perez identified Mourinho as the next manager when it became clear that current boss Alvaro Arbeloa would not be retained. Arbeloa, a former defender, had replaced Xabi Alonso, who was sacked less than eight months into a lengthy contract.
Challenges Ahead
Mourinho faces the task of restoring Real Madrid's dominance in Spanish football after a disappointing season. The club lost the La Liga title to Barcelona, who secured the crown with a 2-0 win against their bitter rivals. Real were also eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Bayern Munich and failed to win the Spanish Cup, having been knocked out by second-tier Albacete in January.
