A 1933 British penny could be worth as much as £150,000, and collectors are urging households to check their change for this ultra-rare coin. The coin, which never entered general circulation, is one of the most sought-after pieces in the UK.
Why the 1933 Penny Is So Valuable
The 1933 George V penny is considered one of the world's rarest and most famous coins. Only seven examples are known to exist, making it exceptionally valuable. Unlike regular pennies, this coin was not minted for public use; instead, a small number were struck to be placed under the foundation stones of buildings and kept for museum records.
Known examples are held in museums, private collections, and church foundations. One was famously stolen in 1970, and another is buried beneath Senate House in London.
How to Spot the Rare Coin
TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, who has 273,000 followers, highlighted the 1933 penny in a recent post. He said: "Attention this coin is worth at least £150,000. This is the 1933 pre-decimal penny from the United Kingdom. Now obviously I don't have the coin, this is a fake copy version."
In the post, he also asked: "Do you have this coin from 1933? If so you are rich." However, he warned that many lookalike coins exist, and collectors should check that the date clearly reads 1933.
He added: "But I guarantee you do not have this coin, how do I know? Because it's one of the rarest coins ever produced, there are other dates on those old pennies you might have though and some do hold a decent value."
"But it's never going to have the crazy value of the 1933 penny, as only seven are known to exist."
Other Dates to Look Out For
The coin expert revealed he receives thousands of messages daily from followers who believe they have found a treasure, but often miss the vital detail – the date. He advised checking the date on any old pennies, as other years may hold value, though none match the 1933 penny's worth.
He added: "There are other dates to look out for, but obviously not as the same value as the 1933 penny."
