Channel 4 is broadcasting a new true crime series revisiting the disappearance of Nicola Payne, ahead of the 35th anniversary of her vanishing. The four-part documentary, titled The Never Ending Murder, originally aired on Amazon Prime Video in 2023.
Nicola Payne was 18 when she disappeared in Coventry in 1991. She left her boyfriend's house on Winston Avenue to walk to her parents' home on Woodway Close in Henley Green, a journey that should have taken six minutes, but she was never seen again.
Documentary details and context
The Never Ending Murder is part of three hours of true crime programming on Channel 4 on Wednesday night, August 26. It follows the first episode of The Murder Detective, an observational documentary about the seven-year investigation into the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Derry in 2019.
The synopsis for The Never Ending Murder states: “In 1991 in Coventry, 18-year-old mum Nicola Payne vanished. The tragic case prompted a high-profile police investigation and extensive media interest. Despite this, Nicola was never heard from again and her case stands as one of the biggest unsolved crimes in British criminal history.”
Investigation history and arrests
Police conducted a widespread investigation after Nicola's disappearance, with two suspects emerging early on. In 2007, a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of abducting and murdering her, but no charges were brought. In 2013, new forensic tests led to three arrests, and in 2015, two men from Coventry were charged with her abduction and murder, but they were all cleared.
A 52-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice was released without charge. Nicola's mother, Marilyn Payne, died in 2023. A social media post at the time said she had given up on trying to find her daughter, adding: "The bravery she showed was extraordinary, and now her determination will continue through her family and many friends in order to finally bring Nicola home."
Police statement and current status
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Hadley from West Midlands Police's force CID previously said that crucial information may still be held in the community. He stated: “We remain as committed as ever to finding Nicola, allowing her family to lay her to rest and to achieving justice for her and for them.
“The inquiry into Nicola’s disappearance is subject to continual review and we will always respond appropriately to new investigative opportunities. Sadly, there are no new lines of enquiry currently for us to pursue.
“One of our specialist family liaison officers (FLOs) is still assigned to Nicola’s family to offer support and update them on any developments. We still believe there maybe people out there who hold information about what happened in 1991 and I urge anyone who has not previously contacted us with information to contact us. It could make all the difference and could finally bring Nicola’s family the closure they deserve."
The Never Ending Murder airs on Wednesday, August 26, at 10pm, on Channel 4.
