Maureen Duffy, known for her fierce advocacy of copyright for all creators, passed away recently. Her contributions to the field of copyright law and her dedication to protecting the rights of creative artists have left a lasting impact.
A Champion for Creators
After recommending me to the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) as chairman following her departure, Duffy also encouraged my involvement with the British Copyright Council, an organization representing the interests of all creative artists. She served as chairman of the council, though she famously disliked the term 'chair,' insisting she was not a piece of furniture.
Battling for Copyright Reform
Duffy seemed perpetually engaged in battles with the UK Copyright Office and European Commission officials responsible for copyright directives. Despite her relentless activism, she continued to produce literary works, finding time to write amidst her advocacy efforts.
Her legacy as a tireless defender of creators' rights will be remembered by all who benefited from her work.
