Martinez apologises for Wilcox outburst after Atletico defeat

Lisandro Martinez has apologised after he called out Jason Wilcox following Manchester United's defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Just as attention was turning to Michael Carrick's press conference on Friday, Martinez apologised for his outburst after the game and played down the drama.

Martinez explains his apology

"Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise," Martinez wrote on social media.

He went on to add context to his post-match rant, explaining that he was frustrated after yet another United defeat and that he recognises his words did not help the situation.

Carrick still faces questions

Carrick will still be asked about the saga at his press conference, but the head coach will no doubt breathe a sigh of relief that he can put the debacle to bed.

In a poll conducted by the Manchester Evening News this week, 95% of nearly 10,000 voters said they agreed with Martinez's comments. It is clear Martinez was just saying what many fans were thinking, but the question remains whether he was wrong to say it publicly and therefore right to apologise.
