Manchester United have announced that Connor King has been appointed as assistant first-team goalkeeping coach.
King was previously at Burnley, where he had various coaching roles since 2018. King cut short his playing career - he joined Burnley's academy aged 11 and was capped by England at Under-16 level - to explore coaching.
Working under Craig Mawson
He has joined to work under lead goalkeeper coach Craig Mawson, who was the only senior United coaching staff member to be retained by Michael Carrick following Ruben Amorim's exit.
United formally announced King's appointment on Thursday afternoon, meaning Carrick is now supported by Steve Holland (assistant manager), Jonathan Woodgate (first-team coach), Jonny Evans (first-team coach), Travis Binnion (first-team coach), Mawson and King (goalkeeper coaches).
Early involvement and coaching group
King recently joined United and helped to oversee the goalkeepers' warm-up before the 1-1 draw against Fulham last weekend.
When it was put to Carrick in August that he could potentially add a set-piece coach, he bristled at the suggestion, responding: “I never said that.”
When asked whether it was something he would explore, Carrick said: “No, we're good with the coaching group.”
United believe Carrick's backroom staff have a strong blend of skillsets and personalities, and those who have observed their coaching at Carrington have said there is a strong dynamic among them.
Poor start to the season
The Reds have made a poor start to the season, though. United have picked up just five points from games against Hull, Ipswich Town, Everton, Manchester City and Fulham, leaving them 12th in the table.
United have a 20-day gap between games due to the extended international break. They will next be in action against Tottenham at Old Trafford on October 10, which has already been dubbed as a must-win for Carrick.
