Love Island narrator Iain Stirling admits awkward voice recognition

Love Island narrator Iain Stirling has admitted that his recognisable voice can make everyday phone calls awkward, particularly when he's trying to do serious tasks like online banking.

Appearing on The One Show, the Scottish comedian, who has voiced the ITV dating show since 2015, revealed that people often identify his voice and go, "Oh, it's him." He told presenters Roman Kemp and Lauren Laverne that this can be awkward when he's on the phone trying to sort out a mortgage, with people asking, "Are you the Love Island guy?"

Recognition in unusual places

Roman Kemp had noted that Stirling's voice has become so recognisable that he knows it instantly in adverts or on TV, and asked if it gets recognised in unusual places. Stirling confirmed it does, sharing the awkward moment during a serious call, adding, "But tonight I would like an extension on my overdraft, please. If that's possible, please."

New series Race Against the Tide

Stirling was on the show to discuss his new series, Race Against the Tide, which features seven teams, each comprising a professional sand sculptor paired with a complete beginner, racing against time to craft sand sculptures before the tide advances.

He previously explained the unique challenge of filming the show, saying, "It's sort of crazy in the world of TV because there's always variables that you can control a bit – if something goes wrong, we can all go, 'Right, let's all pause for lunch, we'll stop the clocks.' But with this show, you literally couldn't. So, the jeopardy was palpable in real time, and hopefully that translates onto the telly as well. When the tide's coming in, the tide's coming in and there's nothing you can do about it."

The One Show airs at 7pm on BBC One on weekdays.
