Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has revealed a humorous struggle he faced during the birth of his fourth child, daughter Constance Ita Shepherd, with wife Hanni Treweek. Speaking on the podcast On the Sofa with former co-star Colson Smith, Shepherd admitted he was tasked with announcing the baby’s sex but couldn’t see properly.
Confusion Over Baby’s Gender
Shepherd and Treweek had kept the baby’s sex a surprise throughout the pregnancy, despite friends and family predicting a boy. Old wives’ tales, including the idea that a smaller bump indicates a boy, proved wrong. When the baby arrived during a home birth, the newborn was placed directly on Treweek’s chest for skin-to-skin contact. Midwives instinctively referred to the baby as 'he', leading Shepherd to initially believe they had a son. It was only after Treweek questioned the gender that Shepherd took another look and confirmed they had a girl.
Colson Smith joked that Shepherd should 'add it to his CV', while someone off-camera dubbed him 'Jacky the Doula'. The podcast’s Instagram page shared a clip with the caption: 'Added to the CV. Jacky P the Doula.'
Welcoming Constance Ita Shepherd
Jack and Hanni announced Constance’s arrival earlier this week, describing it as a 'peaceful home birth'. Sharing a photo on Instagram, Hanni wrote: 'Our beautiful baby girl has arrived, born peacefully at home, surrounded by love.' The couple also revealed how they chose the name, with Jack explaining they Googled French and Italian names for something 'European and posh'. 'Constance came up and it was probably the only one that we both agreed on,' he said. They had a boy’s name ready but refused to reveal it, joking that someone might steal it.
Family and Career
Constance is Shepherd’s fourth child; he has three children from previous relationships. He and Treweek married in July 2025 and announced their pregnancy in February 2026. Shepherd, who has played David Platt on Coronation Street for 26 years, will make his pantomime debut this Christmas as the Prince in Llandudno from December 12 to January 2.
