Idris Elba, the actor best known for his roles in The Wire and Luther, has been knighted in the New Year Honours list for his services to young people. The honour recognises his charity work through the Elba Hope Foundation, which supports community empowerment, education, youth advocacy and sustainable development.
Elba said: 'I hope we can do more to draw attention to the importance of sustained, practical support for young people and to the responsibility we all share to help them find an alternative to violence.'
Other notable recipients include Meera Syal, who becomes a dame for services to literature, drama and charity, and ice skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who were made a dame and knight respectively for services to ice skating and voluntary service. Torvill said the timing of the honour was 'perfect' after they danced on ice for the last time this year.
England's victorious women's football and rugby teams feature prominently. Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch coach who led England to Euro victory, has been made an honorary dame, while captain Leah Williamson receives a CBE. Members of the England Women's Rugby World Cup-winning squad, including Marlie Packer and Zoe Aldcroft, were awarded OBEs.
The oldest recipient is 102-year-old John Hearn, who receives a British Empire Medal for services to judo and the community in north-east England. The youngest is 20-year-old Olympic gold medal-winning sports climber Toby Roberts, who becomes an MBE.
