Cheveley Park Stud has confirmed the immediate retirement of Estrange, the grey mare who claimed Group 1 honours in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh at the end of June. The five-year-old secured six victories from nine outings for trainer David O'Meara.
Retirement decision
Estrange was withdrawn from the Yorkshire Oaks last month, with connections initially planning an autumn campaign that had been expected to include a challenge at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. However, her racing career has now been brought to a close.
A statement from Cheveley Park Stud said: "Whilst Estrange has not had ideal conditions with the very dry summer, it has been decided to retire her to the paddocks."
Bone bruising setback
The statement added: "Estrange suffered some bone bruising during her last race, which meant she has had to have an easy time since and, although an autumn campaign was being envisaged, time is running out to have her fully fit. Therefore Mrs Thompson feels, as she has won her Group One, it is time for her to retire to the paddocks."
The stud also expressed gratitude, saying: "Estrange has given Patricia Thompson, her son Richard, their family and all of us at Cheveley Park Stud some wonderful moments on the racecourse and we cannot thank David O'Meara and his staff enough for training her so wonderfully."
Career highlights
Estrange's record also includes consecutive victories in the Group Three Lester Piggott Stakes and a Group Two triumph in the Lancashire Oaks the previous season. She finished runner-up to Minnie Hauk in the Yorkshire Oaks last summer and, after missing the Arc following an injury setback, ended her 2025 season by finishing behind Kalpana on Champions Day at Ascot.
