A pizza expert has shared five affordable “ingredient upgrades” that instantly elevate a frozen pizza to “taste restaurant quality”. James Nice, pizza expert at premium frozen pizza brand Craft Pizza, explained the simple additions that can make a big difference, from fresh herbs and a drizzle of olive oil to experimenting with cheeses.
Drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
Nice told Express.co.uk: “A light drizzle of good-quality extra virgin olive oil before or after baking is one of the easiest ways to upgrade a frozen pizza.
“It enhances flavour, adds richness and gives that glossy, authentic pizzeria-style finish. If you don’t already have some at home, you can pick up a small bottle for around £1, and a little goes a long way.”
Sprinkle of fresh basil and extra cheese
According to the expert, fresh basil “instantly” adds “aroma and brightness” to a frozen pizza. Most frozen pizzas can lack the fresh herbs you get in a restaurant, so adding them can completely transform the meal. Growing basil at home is super easy thanks to its low-maintenance needs, which means you can have basil on hand.
The pizza pro said: “Cheese can sometimes dry out or slide during freezing. Adding a small handful of freshly grated mozzarella or parmesan before baking boosts flavour, improves melt and gives you that irresistible cheese pull. It also improves presentation dramatically.”
Spices and after-baking toppings
A pinch of chilli flakes or a crack of black pepper can help to add depth and balance, cutting through the richness of the cheese. The expert added: “It’s a simple cupboard staple that costs pennies per portion but makes a noticeable difference.”
James explained: “Adding something fresh or sweet after baking, like a spoonful of caramelised onions or a handful of rocket, creates contrast in flavour or texture. That sweet and peppery balance is what you often find in restaurant pizzas, and it costs around £1 to recreate it at home.”
