Friends of Josh Lloyd-Roberts, a 19-year-old Everton fan who died after being hit by a car while walking home three years ago, are keeping his memory alive with a 100-mile trek. The walk will start at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, where a plaque in Josh's memory is located, and finish at Caernarfon's home pitch at The Oval.
Josh was found on the A4085 Ffordd Waunffawr, in Caeathro, at around 11pm on Friday, June 2, 2023. He was pronounced dead at the scene. North Wales Police has since closed its investigation after arresting a 19-year-old man at the time.
Tributes from family and friends
Josh's mum, Mel Tookey, told the ECHO how Josh was a talented footballer and a popular Cardiff Metropolitan University student who was working in a caravan park at the time of his death. His connection with the local community was showcased when a stand was built in his memory at CPD Bontnewydd FC, where he previously played.
Paying tribute to her son, Mel said: "He was absolutely amazing. I know I am his mum so I am biased but he was just so caring and reasonable. He was well liked and it rocked our whole community when it happened."
Charity trek details
The four-day trek will raise funds for youth support initiatives Gôl Cymru and Porthi Dre Youth Club, alongside men's mental health charity Two Pints Deep. Josh's friend, Huw Griffiths, wrote on the JustGiving page: "We're taking on this challenge to honour Josh's memory while raising money for Gôl, Porthi Dre Youth Club and also Two Pints Deep.
"Three organisations that make a real difference to people's lives. Gol and Porthi Dre having a positive impact on the lives of young people and also Two Pints Deep a men's mental health charity."
Sponsorship and upcoming events
On different days of the walk, participants will wear a personalised shirt featuring a photograph of Josh, along with the logos of sponsors and both charities. Organisers are looking for businesses and individuals to support the walk by sponsoring it. People can donate to the fundraiser ahead of the walk on August 27.
Josh's love for Everton FC was showcased when he was laid to rest with Z Cars playing as he entered the chapel, while his family lined up in Everton shirts with Josh 19 printed on the back. His gravestone also features the Everton badge. A second pre-inquest review into Josh's death is due to take place on September 23.
