Emmerdale star Casey Al-Shaqsy has revealed that the storyline involving her on-screen cousin John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) is over, but hinted his actions could still have lingering effects on her character.
John Sugden's fate and Serena's secret
John was killed off earlier this year in the Corriedale crossover. His cousin Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) initially claimed she had not seen John for years, but Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) found photos on Serena's phone showing they had spent time together while John was on the run last year.
Serena later confessed that John had been generous to her family, even withdrawing his army pension early to save her mother's failing farm. She said she was shocked to learn of his criminal actions in the village, including the death of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter).
What's next for Serena?
Speaking exclusively to OK! Magazine at an Emmerdale press event in Leeds, Al-Shaqsy said: "As far as I'm aware, that has been resolved. It was obviously [about] the money... Serena wanted to help the people that he'd hurt. I know she kept things a secret, I like to always say she never lied, she just didn't tell the whole truth! But you've always got to support the people that you play."
She added: "I think that's done, but who knows. She was close with him, she's been honest about that and been honest that he broke her trust. He lied to her a lot, which he did with a lot of people in the village. So, who knows if it comes back up because it's messed with her mentally."
Al-Shaqsy also hinted at a possible deeper connection: "Or you also don't know a lot about Serena, and there's a world where John is responsible for some of it, so who knows? That is nothing that has been confirmed or discussed! That's just in my own brain going maybe there's a world, but as far as I'm concerned, it's done."
Recent drama for Serena
Serena has been involved in recent plots, including helping Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) and Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) after Sarah accidentally killed Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker). As the investigation continues, it emerged on Monday (August 17) that Serena is close friends with new police officer DS Thea Ramsden (Chelsea Edge), who appears to dislike the Tates.
Emmerdale airs weekday nights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
