British designer Lalage Beaumont has revealed four expert styling tips for dressing like Princess Kate at Royal Ascot this summer. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Express, the designer shared her advice on achieving timeless elegance at the prestigious Berkshire race meeting, which runs from Tuesday, June 17, to Saturday, June 21.
Prepare for the Weather
Lalage emphasised the importance of flexibility when planning an Ascot outfit, given Britain's unpredictable forecasts. She advised: "Be prepared for any weather until the last minute - as long-term weather forecasts are notoriously unreliable!" Layers, lightweight cover-ups and practical accessories can make all the difference throughout the day.
Don't Be Afraid of Colour
When it comes to hats, Lalage noted that modern racegoers are gravitating towards versatile shapes. "I think the boater type shape (but with a wider, slightly turned-down brim) is very popular just now. It is both fashionable and stylish and works with many different outfits," she said. She added that a smaller hat sitting on the head can also look elegant, but emphasised: "Choosing the right hat for your outfit is very important, but you also need to find one that suits you and makes you feel comfortable."
Invest in the Right Fabrics
Fabric choice is crucial for comfort and style during a long day at the races. Lalage recommended silk as the top choice: "It is warm when it is cold and cooler than most other fabrics when it is hot. Choosing a silk that doesn't crease too much will be something you are very glad to have after your journey to the racecourse and being jostled in a crowded stand." On colour, she advised: "Brights look wonderful, but so does white. Classic combos of black and white or navy and white are always chic and timeless."
Take Inspiration from the Royals
Lalage noted that Princess Catherine, Duchess Sophie and Zara Tindall consistently look elegant by favouring simple, cohesive styles. "Simple elegance - nothing too flouncy," she said. "The Royals are often wearing longer lines, fluid silhouettes and this look flatters most people. They also tend to wear a look that is all one colour, or one colour and a contrast. This is another way to look 'put-together', and elegant."
