Michael Douglas has revealed his fear that his wife Davina McCall could die or have a stroke during her recent health battles. The 58-year-old TV presenter has undergone an operation to remove a benign brain tumour and has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
From patient to caregiver
Speaking on the Man Alive with Dr Jeff Foster podcast, Michael reflected on the sudden shift from being a patient to becoming a caregiver for his wife. He said the experience stirred memories of his own health struggles, when he had seen his mother break down in tears at his bedside.
Michael said: "When I was ill with my lungs, I used to look at my mum crying by my bedside and used to think, 'This is horrible for you. This is worse for you than it is for me,' because I was just laid there, getting on with it."
However, when Davina fell seriously ill, he found himself grappling with those same emotions, but from a starkly different perspective. "And then all of a sudden, I was the person sat next to her bed, kind of crying," he explained.
Fear of the worst
Michael went on to express the fear he experienced as Davina underwent treatment, confessing: "And I was, like, God, it's so hard for me, because I just want her to be well, and there was a danger that she was going to die or have a stroke."
The businessman remembered that two brain operations were scheduled at the hospital that day, with another patient undergoing a similar procedure. He revealed he spoke to the family of the woman in the adjacent room after she endured a catastrophic stroke during her procedure.
Michael said the encounter made him understand just how grave Davina's circumstances could have become. "And I thought, 'Oh well, that could be me, actually,' just pushing Davina around in the wheelchair and all that," he said.
A challenging recovery
He confessed he found it difficult to accept the prospect of losing his wife. "So I really had to kind of come to terms with that idea. I found it very hard," Michael said.
He also outlined the period following Davina's brain operation as especially tough, explaining she left hospital with serious issues affecting her memory. "And then she came out of hospital almost with Alzheimer's, she couldn't remember anything," he said.
Michael said the circumstances were made worse by strains relating to his business, leaving him feeling as if he was being pulled in multiple directions. "I would say 2025, last year, was the most challenging year of my whole life, and it had a lot to do with her recovery," he revealed.
Breast cancer diagnosis and all clear
Just as they seemed to be navigating one health scare, Davina was diagnosed with breast cancer. She previously disclosed that medics discovered a lump in her breast and that she had a lumpectomy before undergoing radiotherapy.
In April, Davina shared some positive news on her Making The Cut podcast, announcing that she had been given the "all clear" following a check-up. She has also encouraged individuals to get screened, expressing that she felt "incredibly lucky" that her cancer was detected "very, very early".
The former Big Brother presenter has been a long-standing advocate for women's health issues, including menopause awareness, after her brain tumour was discovered during a health check related to her advocacy work.
