Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft will be absent from the broadcasting booth for the entire Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix weekend. The 55-year-old has chosen to attend the Download Festival at Donington Park instead.
Why David Croft Is Not Commentating
Croft, known as 'Crofty', decided to take a personal break from the commentary box to enjoy the rock and metal music festival. He hinted at his plans during a live broadcast of the second practice session in Monaco, where he joked about checking the weather forecast for Donington Park to decide if he needed wellies.
Presenter Rotation Policy
His absence aligns with Sky Sports' rotation policy for on-air personnel, implemented due to the record-breaking length of the modern Formula One season. The schedule has expanded significantly in recent years, and rotating commentators helps prevent burnout during long travel stretches.
Previous Missed Races
This is not the first time Croft has stepped back from live commentary. Over the past two F1 seasons, he has missed the Emilia Romagna, Austrian, and Azerbaijan Grands Prix for personal breaks.
Replacement Commentator
Harry Benjamin, a familiar voice for BBC Radio 5 Live, will take over lead commentary duties for the weekend. Benjamin made his Sky F1 debut during the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix and entered the commentary booth for the first time at Imola in May 2024.
Grand Prix Schedule
The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix takes place this weekend, with the main race starting at 2pm BST on Sunday. The circuit was recently renamed.
Brundle's Reduced Schedule
Co-commentator Martin Brundle has also scaled back his appearances, confirming he will attend only 15 races this year after the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian events.
