Dame Helen Mirren has been appointed a Companion of Honour (CH) in the King’s Birthday Honours. The 80-year-old English actress, renowned for her portrayal of DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, was recognized for her services to drama.

The Companion of Honour is a prestigious award that acknowledges significant contributions to the arts, science, medicine, or government over an extended period. Only 65 individuals can hold this honour at any given time.

Early Life and Career

Born Ilynea Lydia Mironoff in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, Dame Helen initially trained as a teacher but abandoned her studies to pursue acting. She made an immediate impact playing Cleopatra in a 1965 National Youth Theatre production. She soon joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, taking on numerous classical roles before landing key parts in the 1980s, including The Long Good Friday, Excalibur, and Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover.

Rise to Fame with Prime Suspect

In the 1990s, she became a household name as DCI Jane Tennison in the crime thriller Prime Suspect, earning three consecutive Baftas and an Emmy. After a seven-year hiatus, she returned for the sixth series in 2003 and Prime Suspect: The Final Act in 2006.

Oscar Win and Other Accolades

Dame Helen received four Academy Award nominations, including for The Madness Of King George (1994) and Gosford Park (2001). She won the Best Actress Oscar in 2007 for her regal role in The Queen, which follows Queen Elizabeth II after Princess Diana’s death. She has also starred in the US TV movie The Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone (2003) and Calendar Girls alongside Julie Walters and Celia Imrie. Recently, she reunited with Imrie in the film adaptation of Richard Osman’s murder mystery The Thursday Murder Club. The film also features Pierce Brosnan, who plays her on-screen husband in Guy Ritchie’s crime drama series Mobland.
